But what is white noise?
White noise is repetitive or regular noise that partially or completely masks everyday sounds. It could be a heartbeat, rain, hoover or waves, for example. These noises reassure children and, in a hypnotic way, help them to fall asleep more quickly. But this is nothing new. Before precious cuddly toys, we were already using this technique, but with the means at hand. I have incredible memories of my little brother's bedroom with the hoover running for quite a long time, until he fell asleep.
Why the term "white noise"?
There's a sort of analogy with white light. White noise contains all the frequencies perceived by the human ear, just as white light contains all the visible colours.
